    New Ideas

    December 27, 2018 by Salnax

I'm going to be having another go at this, at least for a while.

The following is what I envision for the 8th generation hardware.

    • 2011 - The Game Boy 3DS is launched at the end of the year, about 8 months later than OTL's 3DS.
    • 2012 - The Stream and Eclipse launch in November, similar to when the Wii U did OTL. These consoles are closer to the the Wii U than the Xbox One in terms of power.
    • 2013 - Though things seem bright on the surface, it is clear to the higher ups at Nintendo and Sega that something is going wrong. The Game Boy 3DS is selling only about half as well as the Game Boy Nitro did. The rise of PC gaming in several markets, along with the advancing power of PC's, made some multiplatform games ported to Stream and Eclipse look like t…

    Games Cancelled IRL

    December 16, 2015 by Salnax

Today's emphasis is on cancellations of the past decade. Let's look for inspiration from these unfinished projects.

During their ongoing demise prior to 2013, THQ began developing an Avengers game for the PS3 and X360 to coincide with the Marvel movie released the same year. The studio responsible was THQ Australia, with some aid from Blue Tongue Enertainment. They planned on making a game that focused on controlling the team's members in a first-person perspective, using a story distinct from the film's. There would also be a strong element of cooperative play, with the campaign supporting up to four players online and locally.

The game was eventually cancelled in 2011 with the closure of both studios, but a fair amount of footage for the gam…

Taking a look at real events to consider.

    • August 12 - PT, the playable teaser for Silent Hills is released. The game is cancelled by April.
    • October 11 - New Nintendo 3DS is released in Japan. Europe and America get it in Early 2015.
    • November 6 - Microsoft purchases Mojang of Minecraft fame.
    • March 4 - Elecrtronic Arts closes Maxis.
    • March 17 - Nintendo announces a partnership with DeNA.
    • July 11 - Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, passes away due to medical complications.
    • September 14 - Nintendo gets an organizational overhaul. Tatsumi Kimishima becomes President and the EAD and SPD divisions are merged into a single EPD division.

Feel free to add comments and additions.

Camelot needs more time for a new Eclipse game than they got in real life for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Their Sonic Tennis game would be released circa Summer 2016.

A Sonic collection could be released in 2015 to bridge the gap between Lost World and the 25th anniversary title. Perhaps it would consist of the "Adventure Trilogy" and Heroes w…

I enjoy making these, so here is how I imagine someone reacting in real time to these press conferences. Note that all four are traditional, unlike IRL's E3 Nintendo Direct.

This Blog will be where I do some sandboxing for the events of E3 2014 in Ohga Shrugs. Today, I'll be doing a preliminary guess at what Nintendo, Sega, and others would show off, and will make changes based on next week's events IRL.

    • The focus is on big games for the Stream and Game Boy 3DS
    • Stream Games include Zelda, Animal Crossing 5, Super Smash Bros 4, Fire Emblem, Mario Party 10, and Yarn Yoshi.
    • Game Boy 3DS Games include Pokemon G3 remakes, Super Smash Bros 3D, F-Zero 3D, WarioWare 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D.
    • Quality of Life technology is also mentioned, to be elaborated upon later
    • Conclusion: Nintendo has a solid lineup for both of their systems, and is not going anywhere.

    • Split between software and services
    • Big games for the Eclipse include Sonic Boom, B…

A rough schedule for the year ahead. Open to adjustments, so feel free to comment!

    • Thief - February (
    • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - April (Various)
    • Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark - June (Various)
    • Destiny - September (PC and 8th gen consoles)
    • Skylanders 4 - October (Various)

Call of Duty is not yet an annual franchise, though Activision is quickly working to make it one.

    • Etrian Odyssey 5 - June (Game Boy 3DS)
    • Tales of Zestiria - TBA (TBA)
    • Ace Combat Infinity - TBA (Various)

Note: the fate of Persona is unknown in Ohga SHrugs. Is it the same niche hit as in OTL, bigger, or smaller? If bigger, replace Etrian Odyssey 5 with OTL's Persona Q. If smaller, what are the resources devoted to Persona games in OTL devoted to? Perhaps a Shin Megami Tensei reboot for 8t…

It may be a bit early, but I like thinking about this sort of thing. Anyhow, here are some possible sales figures for early 2014.

    • Game Boy 3DS - 1,000,000 units
    • Stream - 690,000 units
    • Eclipse - 690,000 units
    • Pluto - 350,000 units
    • Revolution - 290,000 units
    • Game Boy Nitro - 73,000 units

Note that at this point, the 8th gen consoles combined are performing somewhere between real life's PS4 alone and all three 8th gen consoles combined. This is likely to change as the PS4 launches in Japan, as the PS4 looks likely to dominate real life sales.

I tried something new with Game Boy 3DS sales, basing them off of not only 3DS but also Vita numbers. This helped the Game Boy 3DS, since the Vita has been doing better than usual so far in 2014.

    Sorry about my Absence lately

    December 10, 2013 by Salnax

Basically, what the title says. There are chunks of my life at the moment where it becomes very difficult to dedicate time to things like this wiki. Still, it wasn't fair of me to abandon you for a month or so. In the future, I'll try to be more consistent, or at least give warnings about whether I'll not be available for a while.

On the bright side, The next month or so should be fairly easy for me in real life, which should transfer over to here. As soon as I get caught up in what's been happening recently, both on this wiki and the general world of video gaming, I'll be able to work on this wiki a lot more.

Sorry again, and thanks for your understanding.

    • Capcom could go under, much like it may in real life, in which case it would either have its components and franchises picked apart by other companies, or be acquired by a larger company. Enix once again is a possibility, but what about a major non-gaming company looking to diversify. Like, I dunno... Sony?
    • Konami, pleased with their success with the Metal Gear franchise, including Metal Gear Solid: Special Ops, decides to make a movie based on the series, similar to how Squaresoft made a Final Fantasy movie in real life. Depending on the success of the movie, it could either lead to a great video game prescence in Hollywood, end right there, or even hurt Konami much like it hurt Square. 2014 Lineup

    September 27, 2013 by Salnax

KNMC mentioned on the Mother talk page that we needed to discuss the lineup for the Stream and Eclipse in 2014. I decided to throw in all of my current plans/guesses in one place.

Items in bold are major games, likely flagship titles for their companies and platforms. Italicized items can likely be delayed or cancelled. I'm doing only first party stuff now, but will update this blog with third party games later.

    • Call of Duty 11 (PC/Stream/Eclipse)
    • Skylanders 4 (Stream/Eclipse)

    Sega Sammy Buys Atlus IRL!

    September 18, 2013 by Salnax

I just got the news that Atlus's parent company Index Corporation is being bought out by Sega Sammy. [1][2]

In Ohga Shrugs, I suspect that this would translate to Atlus being acquired by Namco Sammy, meaning Atlus's franchises and developers would become part of the Namco empire, much like how Hudson becomes part of Nintendo.

What would the results of this be like? How would Namco, with their emphasis on Fighting games, treat Atlus's properties, which are largely RPG's? Is the Tales series an indicator of how Namco would treat the Megaten games? Should Sammy even be the one to buy Atlus in the Ohga Shrugs timeline?

    Please leave your opinions.

    I accidentally made a Wiki

    September 13, 2013 by Salnax

I was browsing Wikia when I saw a section about how to create a Wiki in a few easy steps. I was curious about the process, so I clicked an icon or two.

And before I knew what was going on...

Now what? Should I leave that Main Page blank forever, as a testament to my accidental process? Should I use that wiki as a sort of "back-up" of my timeline, thus giving Ohga Shrugs a second home? Should I permanently move base there, using my "Founder" powers to exercise greater control over the creative process?

I've enjoyed working with everybody on this wiki, but even I have to admit, I've mostly been interested in my own singe project, and I've put in a majority of the work in Ohga Shrugs. If you guys would rather not have game-related images and art…

2007 has been a great first full year for the Revolution. We've had experimental new games that aim for a wider audience, the evolution of old series, and the creation of entire new genres.

I personally though, can't get past the Virtual Console.

Concept: Essentially, to be a reimagining of the PilotWings series made for the Game Boy Nitro. Technically speaking, think something between the N64 title and OTL's Resort. Game would take advantage of true 3D gameplay on a handheld and the analog nub for controls. So, a lot like 64.

The game would be divided into two main modes: free flight and mission mode. A lot like Resort, but without the time limits for free flight. The game would feature one fairly large location, probably an island.

The game's possible "hook" could be multiplayer missions. Players would be able to fly in the same environments, with special competitive missions (racing, break the targets, find the X, etc.) Those…

    Ohga's Revenge

    April 25, 2013 by Salnax

So the latest popular althist on this site is "Ohga's Revenge." And I'll give it some credit. It shows a great understanding of video game history, is decently written, and shows a lot of research. There's only one problem.

    It's b***f*** insane.

I mean, let's look at the point of divergence. Norio Ohga gets so angry at Nintendo executives that he lets the guy who made the SNES's sound processor create an alternative brand. Just excusing how farfetched that idea is for a moment, how would they ever get off the ground? Starting a game company isn't easy, and Sony had virtually no games division in real life. How were they supposed to go from nothing to a big ch…

The following blog explains the logic of Nintendo and Sega in their designing of consoles later on in the Ohga Shrugs timeline. Or in other words, "Why are the Eclipse and Stream so much weaker than OTL's PlayStation 4?"

    Several reasons.

    1. Neither Sega or Nintendo have traditionally released expensive consoles. Nintendo, of course, is famous for launching the Game Boy at half the price of its competitors, but this extends to the console sphere as well.

In both real life and Ohga Shrugs, the original NES launched for $200, the SNES for $200, the N64 for $200 ($250 in Ohga Shrugs), and the GameCube, again, for $200. Notice a trend? The main reason the real-life Wii cost $250 was because of the expensive motion controller plus, in most places, …
